Learn How to Play BlackJack

Basic Principles of Playing BlackJack

BASIC RULES OF THE GAME OF BlackJack

The Object of the Game -The objective is to beat the dealer not to get as close to 21 as possible.

Value of Cards - Each card has the same value as its face except for the ace and the picture cards. All 10's and picture cards are valued as 10. The ace can be valued as 1 or 11.

Blackjacks or Naturals - If the first two cards dealt to a player are an ace and a ten valued card, the player has a blackjack or a natural. A blackjack pays 3-2. If a dealer also has a blackjack, this is a considered a standoff or tie.

Hitting Or Standing - The player has the option to take additional cards. A player can take as many extra cards as he wants, as long as his total does not exceed 21.

If the player decides to take no additional cards, this is called standing.

Busting or Too Many - If a players takes extra cards an the value exceeds 21 he has "busted" and will lose the hand regardless of the dealers total.

Standoffs – If the dealer and the player have the same total the hand is called a standoff. The player does not lose his wager but does not win either.

Dealers Play - The dealer's play is determined by rules which he must follow. The dealer must draw until he has a total of 17 or above.

Doubling Down - A player has an option of doubling his original bet if he has a total of 9,10 or 11. In some casino's you can double any two cards which provides the player with an additional advantage. If a player doubles, he receives one additional card only.

Pair Splitting – If the player’s first two cards are identical in value, the player can split them by betting an amount equal to his original bet. Additional cards are drawn on each of the split pairs, which have now become separate hands.

Hard and Soft Hands - Any hand which the player’s counts as an 11 without taking his total over 21 is called a soft hand. For example if you have a Ace and a 6, you have soft 17 (you can call your hand 7 or 17). If you had a 10 and a 7 you would have hard 17 (you can call your hand 17 only).

Insurance - If the dealer up card is an ace, the player can make a side bet referred to as insurance. The amount the player can wager on this side bet is anywhere up to half his original bet. If the dealer gets a blackjack, the player is paid 2-1 on this side wager. The term insurance is used because if the dealer gets blackjack, the player loses his original bet but receives 2-1 on insurance, thus saving the original bet.

Summary of Play

The dealer will deal a round of cards face up, you will receive 2 cards faced up in total and the dealer will have 1 card face up.

You are trying to beat the dealer, remember that the dealer must stand on 17 and above, and must draw to a min of 17.

You want to get as close to 21 without busting, and you want to be higher than the dealer.  Remember that the dealer must continue taking cards until he has a min of 17, so he too can bust.

It is your decision to take additional cards or not.  By being able to see the card that the dealer has sitting in front him, you then have to make an assessment on what the likelihood of his being forced to stand or bust depending on his cards.

Example if you has a 7, then he may get a 10 and be forced to sit.  So if you have 18 you would not take another card.  But if you have 14 then you would have to realize that if the dealer gets a 10 he must stand, you will loose.  He could get a 4 and draw another card and get a 10 and bust.  This is where you need to make your judgments.
