How does The Martingale System work?
If I was playing roulette this is how it might work; Lets say that I am playing red and black on the roulette table and I make a bet on red, if I lose that bet then I would double up my bet next time.
I would once again place another bet on Red. If I loose a 2nd time then I would up double my bet once again, placing the bet back on Red. I would keep doing this until I had a win, then I would go back to my original bet.
This sounds like a great winning system, one which you could play at any time of the day on any roulette table or craps table.
However you might win in the beginning, and I have seen some people walk away with filthy money in their pockets. I have also had personal experience with this system of betting, as I too have played this. In the early days I did have some wins, but eventually it brings the best of us gamblers to our knees, and in the end I lost.

Let’s look at an example of the Martingale System of Betting on a roulette table starting with $5 bets. Remember that almost all casinos have a maximum table bet. Many five-dollar tables have a maximum bet of around $500. If I was to bet using this system of betting and I continued to loose this is how it would look on a $5 roulette table:
- I bet $5 and I lose.
- My next bet is $10. If I lose:
- My next bet is $20. If I lose:
- My next bet is $40. If I lose:
- My next bet is $80. If I lose:
- My next bet is $160. If I lose:
- My next bet is $320. If I lose:
- My next bet will be $640 which exceeds the maximum table bet
I busted many cash floats in the early days until I realized that this type of betting should be labeled "Ambulance Chasing", it always fails. In the long run when you eventually loose you wipe out all your winnings, and this can happen in just one session of betting.
